720p upscaled Haruhi?

Hey.

So liek, there is a TS file torrented for ep1 of the Haruhi reairing.

Would you guys be interested in me swiping the subs from one of the dual audio releases and syncing it up with the 720p upscales?

There doesn’t appear to be anyone doing it… and well, it’s not like it’d be much work. :D No timing or copying down subs… just basically restyling and then fitting it to the raw.

(Though the a.f.k. subs’d be better… but the drive I had their release on is dead ;o; – and that would be a lot more work D:)

Edit: After looking at them… I’ve decided not to. They look horrible. :<

Will the 720p upscaling result in some drop in quality? I mean, I’ve seen some anime has that drop unless it is good quality…

  • kingalekz says:

Upscales are a big no-no. You won’t get any new information or details with an upscale, just because the picture is bigger. A good mediaplayer should upscale the SD versions with the same effect.
But that’s just my opinion. Others go crazy for upscales :P

  • Station upscales always look better than encoder upscales… or decoder upscales, because they have the original master source to work from.

So it would look slightly better than when you take a.f.k.’s subs and make them fullscreen.

And we already upscale our Haruhi-chan/Nyoron subs :P

  • kingalekz says:

I know what you mean, but with the word upscale I always have a bad feeling about it. It just sounds redundant.
    But nevermind…

  • Arc says:

Well, even if the broadcasting stations can work with the master source, I don’t think a TV upscale would be that much better than the DVD source.

The quality of the transport stream really worth a resub ?

  • The Gentleman Caller says:

There’s a.f.k. softsubs, if they might be of any help in this case:

Regardless, it’s really your choice as to what to do, and I’m sure that people will be happy regardless of the decision you make.

  • Blah says:

Even though I wouldn’t be downloading them, just to let you know, if you want an easy way of getting a.f.k.’s subs, just download Hitsuji’s DVDRips (if you can find them that is), since they use a.f.k.’s translations and it’s all softsubbed.

  • Peter says:

Hmmmm… I think you should do episode 1, see the response people have is positive or not, and go from there. I’d love to give it a go, so I vote go for it!

  • jusuchin85 says:

I would agree with Peter; try to upload one episode of it and see the response from the public. If they prefer the upscale release, then you can go ahead and do the rest. If not, then just keep it to the usual uploads. ^^

  • plau says:

Yea, try doing an episode… Personally, I prefer official subs, but that’s just my opinion. It would also be nice if you could sync in the English audio track (not that I prefer it, I just like having both audio tracks for comparison)

  • ashlee123 says:

i say whatever have the better quality and shows more then go with that.

  • Random-kun says:

I’d love it…I actually started to do the same myself. I dl the TV-J raw and put the softsubs on (since I can’t encode from the ts). Try it, see if people like it, then continue if people like it.

  • billeke says:

I’m with Peter: do it and see the response, and yeah a.f.k. script is probably the best choice

  • phoenix923 says:

Sure go on ahead and do it, even though I own the series I want to see if any changes are made. And if there ever going to announce a second season… Kadokawa is just tempting us with Haruhi-chan and the re-airing. Jerks…

  • Lmm says:

What’s the bitrate on the transport stream? If it’s less than that of the DVD (modulo maybe a factor of 2 for differences between codecs) there’s very little point.

  • troolie says:

The only way for an upscale to be better than the source is when the master quality is poor and a good deal of handpicked filtering is done.
Of course, that’s never the case as stations use the same automated processing for every program. Beside, most TS are interlaced telecined anamorphic crap requiring quite a bit a work to go back to a real 720p.
All those steps destroy details of the original picture, create all sorts of artifacts from repeatedly changing colorspace. Not to mention logos and pesky flash news texts or DVD/BR release date and so on.

So, no, a station upscale can’t be better than R2 DVD (but might be better than R1 DVD as they use 3rd rate sources almost as bad as Chinese bootleg).

  • Peter says:

After browsing THE ENTIRE INTERNET I found the raw of what was labelled as episode 2 but was actually episode 3 (aka “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Part 2″). This might suggest that they decided against airing episode 00 (though, as a “student video”, it probably wouldn’t stand up to HD). Either that or they’re airing in chronological order.

In my opinion, the quality looks awesome. It’s certainly much sharper than my other copy. I don’t have the first volume of the DVD yet, so I can’t compare. I’d love to have a sub done ^_^

  • Peter says:

OK. I re-read my previous comment and realized how stupid I am. I compared my HD raw with my region 2 PAL (UK) volume 2 DVD. I concentrated on the opening sequence, and the HD raw wins by far. This was tested on a 40″ TV connected to an iMac. TV is running at 1080p.

    The more you know…

  • KuroiTi says:

    Haters.

Upscaling can be good /me thinks. Upscaling allows you to see the picture enlarged, and so allows you to see how the people will see itt. Sometimes you see you didn’t denoise enought, ro that you could’ve done better sharpening.

NAturally, just using ZOOM would show those things, still, I think an upscale could be beneficial.

  • K.Ichijou says:

Well, I found something about re-run.
It looks like this re-run got SOME NEW SCENES:
    http://asuna888-en.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-scenes-spotted-in-haruhi-reruns.html
So, be careful, Shami, because there may be something wrong. Also there are some rumors about this rerun having 28 episodes…

  • Forte says:

    http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=76787

Supposedly it’s going to be 2x as long now, 28 instead of 14 episodes, and from what someone said above, some of the scenes are extended, so swiping subs from somewhere else won’t work on all of the episodes.

  • jedi423 says:

The new airing is the DVD version, which is why there are “new” scenes and such. There are subs out there for the DVD version, but the upscaled raws I’ve seen looked pretty grainy, so I’m not sure what the point would be.

  • Peter says:

May I suggest watching the FLR-RAWS release. They’re are so awesome it’s untrue. The grainy bit is at the beginning of episode 1 (melancholy part 1) when Kyon is voicing over. The moment it becomes full colour, you see the awesome quality ^^

  • J4cK0fHe4rt5 says:

I just thought, regarding the 28 episode run, if they air season 2 directly AFTER season 1, (assuming they show one haruhi episode ever week), 14 episodes would bring us to around mid-July, and the second series was announced July 07. So that’s exactly two years. I know it’s kinda grasping, but it is kinda too neat.

  • Brandon says:

So are you guys going to sub the new season? You yourself claim a.f.k. is better yet well, do they have a website? lol
    cuz I can’t seem to find it….

Anyways, the re-air will have extended scenes and the new episodes are interspersed between the old ones or something. I don’t know what you guys want to do because taking other subs might not work. =/

  • K.Ichijou says:

Brandon, a.f.k. are AFK since last year.
They don’t seem to exist now. I’ve asked them at IRC and the answer was they’ve decided on breaking the group.
    There is no a.f.k. now.

  • Woo! says:

Kadokawa does not know how to do upscales. If I ever get the time I will do one that will knock their pants off. This is no boast, either.

  • Brandon says:

So will you be subbing the new re-air episodes?

  • The Gentleman Caller says:

    @ Brandon

He decided not to do them, the edit in the topic says that.

Oh, by the way. I know that more work on your plate is probably the least desirable thing at the moment, but it being Friday, the latest batch of episodes are out. Pretty good ones too.

  • nainodel says:

I’m kinda sad that you won’t make them. The FLR-RAWS were better that what I already had (Hitsuji’s release). The DVD rips in this case looked horribly grainy when in fullscreen, Also, I like the text not getting larger when I fuvllscreen the video.

I do hope that if new episodes do come out, a group also subs the re-air episodes for the purposes of keeping the whole “new season” of old and new episodes consistent.

  • jedi423 says:

If you really want to use the FLR-RAWS, you can use mkvmerge to mux them with hitsuji’s subs. You might have to change a couple times with Aegisub, but it’s not too difficult. Although if hitsuji’s release looks grainy, you either aren’t using a good media player or have a really high resolution monitor.

  • Xeno says:

no more hq torrent release anymore?? O_O
