The Copper Pots

Hey everyone. This is gonna be a kinda weird post, but go with me. I’m still working on eps… but yeah.

Anyways, today I’m looking for some help for a foundation that supports research for Crohn’s Disease. Crohn’s is a nasty digestive disease that slowly destroys a person’s digestive system, and leaves them in a really bad state for their entire life.

My mom has it, and I’ve seen it with my own eyes what it can do to a person. Let me tell you, it’s nasty.

In the first reply to this post, I’ve posted the letter my mom wrote up to her friends, asking for donations. I’ll ask the same thing – please, if you can spare a few bucks, help us find a cure for this disease.

Our team is called the Copper Pots, and you can see our team page here.

Thanks for reading this, and THANK YOU if you’re willing to donate for the cause. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at jkaizer@gmail.com or my mom at hazel@snowpig.org

Thanks~

Edit: Sorry, didn’t realize how confusing the page was. ^^ If you’d like to donate, you can do so through THIS page. On the right side is a “Support Gregory Now” button… use that :)

  • Here’s the letter from my mom:

My team and I will be participating in the Bloomington Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis Walk on Sunday, May 17, 2009 We have made a bold commitment to raise much needed funds to find a cure for digestive diseases. This is the first year we are participating in this event. The team consists of my husband Mike, my children Greg, Jeff, and Alissa and Kaitlyn Gartner. Our team name is The Copper Pots.

One in every two hundred people suffer daily with digestive diseases. For those who live with these chronic diseases, life is a roller coaster of active and remitting disease. However, the opportunity to make life more manageable for patients who live day to day with intense pain, the threat of long term hospital stays and multiple surgeries, has never been greater.

For those of you unfamiliar to what Crohn’s disease is, here is some information. Crohn’s disease is infection and inflammation of the digestive system. It be found anywhere in the digestive tract from the mouth all the way to the anus. It can cause uncerations, gas, bloating, fistulas, massive amounts of pain and eventually blockages. These blockages are caused by bouts of inflammation over and over in the same area which scars. This scarring over and over thins down the inside of the bowel wall causing the pain as normal digestive habits are affected. There is currently no cure for Crohn’s. When a blockage occurs, surgery is required to remove it.

There are also several embarassing every day complications, such as large gas build-ups, mouth sores, and joint pain. Crohn’s disease really does affect every part of a person’s life, and even the thought of having some sort of cure for it is an amazing thought. People that get this disease end up suffering for the remainder of their life, from diagnosis to death, both physically and mentally.

A similar digestive disease is Ulcerative Colitis which affects only the large intestine. Our friend and neighbor in Wisconsin has this disease. We are also walking for you, Sherry!

I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in the spring of 1984. This disease has caused me a lot of discomfort and pain throughout the years with two surgeries to date. I really hope a cure can be found so that others don’t ever have to live with this disease. Please consider donating to this very worthy cause.

We are asking you to help by supporting my fundraising efforts with a donation. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of the 1.4 million patients suffering with digestive disease! You can make your donation online by simply clicking on the link at the bottom of this message. If you would prefer, you can also send your tax-deductible contribution to the address listed below. Another option is to contact me and I’ill gladly pick up your donation.

Any amount, great or small, helps in the fight! We greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on our progress.

Oh man… I’m sorry to hear that. I’m an eager fan of Samisen subs, but I’ve also have Crohn’s. I was diagnosed 14 years ago when I was almost 21. I’ve been off work on disability for almost 2 years now.

There are good years, bad years, and years that just suck the life out of you and your family. What your mom has gone through sucks and I wish her lengthy periods of remission in her future!

I don’t have the money to spare right now :( , but I am helping out by being part of a medical trial for a new Crohn’s drug. Hopefully it will be able to help people like your mom out if it reaches the market in 2012 or so…

Good luck, and take care of your family!

  • Blah says:

Oh man… I would donate if I could, but unfortunately, well…
I hope some miracle happens and things get better for everyone with this disease. I can imagine it must be terrible to live with this disease, or any other disease for that matter. Until then, good luck with the fundraising and I hope that your mom feels better soon!

  • Dooms says:

I know someone that has Crohn’s although she is stable and has almost no symptoms of the disease…nevertheless, as Trevor already mentioned, there are good years, bad years, and years that just suck the life out of you and your family so I am willing to donate!

Care to explain, in short, how do I do that?!?

  • Dooms, your friend is very lucky to have almost no symptoms… it really is as Trevor says, you have the good, bad, and hell years. My mom has been pretty lucky – she’s had mainly good years, but the past 2ish have been pretty bad, which is why she went through a surgery in December… first one in 14 years!

Sorry for my idiocy… didn’t look at the page well enough. I’ve added a link to a page that should be a bit more clear. (It looks a bit different when you’re logged in as a walker versus not… I think)

Thanks for the comments guys!! It means a lot :)

  • Dooms says:

Ok…thanks for the fix and I will make a donation tomorrow since it is getting pretty late now here ^^!

Are you going to participate in the walk-a-thon as well btw?!?

  • The Gentleman Caller says:

A friend I know online has suffered from Crohn’s for years, and it’s really taken a toll on him and everyone that cares about him. Sometimes he’s in such rough shape he barely sleeps.

I’m afraid that I don’t have anything to donate, but my heart goes out to your mother and anyone else that suffers from this horrible affliction. Best wishes to you and your family.

  • Thanks TGC :)

And Dooms, yep, I’ll be walking!

  • Lensman says:

Being a men’s rights activist, I remember coming across a blog of a guy that CLAIMS to have gotten rid of the disease by following a combination of the Beck Protocol and a diet of “Quinoa, eggs, berries, chicken, veggies”.

    Here is the link:

    http://exploitationnation.blogspot.com

Check out the July 2008 archives to find this claim. His chronicles on Crohn’s disease and how the doctors made it worse are also very interesting.

Maybe you should get in touch with the guy.

Don’t get me wrong, I WILL send money for your cause, but I think this method will at least make your mother feel better until a “proper cure” is out there.

(I guess being an otaku AND an MRA is useful)

  • Lensman says:

    A word of warning though…

I am not a doctor, I am not qualified to give health advice, I am a Men’s Right’s Activist and what that blogger claims about Crohn’s disease -that the disease is not really autoimmune, that the medical companies have tried to suppress information about the disease being spread through a bacterium in dairy products, and that the current methods of treating the disease are wrong- can easily be just a “conspiracy theory”.

This page says that this a subject of debate:

    http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/568374

My advice to you is to check his claims before you do anything. Have your mother tested, through real sensitive PCR, that she has the bacterium he claims 100% of Crohn’s patients have (Mycobacterium Avium Para-Tuberculosis).

If the tests come out positive then he might really be onto something and find out more about the bacterium and its connection to the disease. If they come out negative, you should ignore him and do what the doctors tell you.

  • As interesting as he might be… I’d have to argue against most of what he says, on principle. I just got done with a Nutrition class (took my final today, actually) and a few things stand out.

“Stop eating shitty foods like Dairy, Wheat, Sugar, Greasy foods, and so on. Dairy is terrible for you, if you think otherwise your an idiot.” <– Dairy is a very important part of our diet, especially milk. It provides us with a LOT of goodies that are hard to get elsewhere, and is the main provider of calcium and dietary Vitamin D. Wheat is also pretty good for you. (Sugar and greasy foods are bad for you, so I won’t argue there)

    Also, dude, it’s “you’re”, not “your” ;)

“Take quality vitamins, no the stuff from the local pharmacy is shit.” <– A well balanced diet, which helps a LOT of stuff, does not require supplements.

And as a child, my mom didn’t have much milk, actually, so the chances are pretty slim for that, since she was diagnosed at 16. :/

But yeah… interesting read. He might be a bit more believable if he used less… language and got a good editor.

  • spider says:

My brother has Crohns and was diagnosed 4 years ago. He’s not one to complain, but he had it quite bad when it was first discovered. Since then he’s been ‘ok’ as long as he stays away from cabbage and other green-’gassy’ veggies, nuts/popcorn and a few other foods.

My heart goes out to you, and I wish you and your mother the best of luck. I hope this bout subsides soon and that she stays in remission for years to come. :)

Keep moving forward, and continue to turn everything into something positive!
