Encoders, please give your final products
So liek, encoders, the general opinion is:
- no op/ed
- A:Red 704/720×480
- prettyified
- make it work with all players
- have good audio for the audio-freaks
Offer up your final offerings, and we’ll have a poll.
The winner will be hired, and the second place person may be hired too. I have lots that needs encoding and I just want to abuse the new Shamisen one(s).

In other words, prelim work has begun on the High School Musical sub. ;D

better quality, better sound, but for some reason the sound at the credits have disappeared and i have no clue why.
what means i suck and probably won’t be chosen
You did more than the vast majority of anime fans will ever do…you did something. Take pride in that.
The same goes for everyone else involved.
I FEEL THE PRIDE.
You try again? Or try to splice in the audio?
Gavers latest release is awesome. I’d say it’s perfect, if it weren’t for the sound dissapearing during the credits deal. Other than that, I have no complaints. If you do it this well on all the releases (and maybe get the sound back for the credits somehow), I defenitely won’t complain about you doing the encodes. ^^
+1 vote for gavers?!
Sorry I don’t want to complicate things but I did an encode ._.

The audio is in mp3 (for wider compatability) at preset standard (q2; any higher is overkill).
The aspect ratio is ITU 16:9 NTSC (1.822784). I was wondering whether it was right to use that but I measured the Earth at the start of the episode and it was more circular using the ITU ratio.
The filesize is small, but I used crf=18; any better is overkill. I like to stick close to the source so it is barely distinguishable from the DVD even though the filesize is so small.
That said, Gavers’ encode looks better: it has brighter colours and sharper lines.
OH GAWD COMPLICATIONS
:3
hmm I guess I failed on the prettyfied criterion. Your original post said “look like gold” which I took to mean “look like DVD”. “perfect filtering” I took to mean “attention to detail”/tweaking in general/clean up the source because I hadn’t seen the source yet. “no clue what they’re doing” I took to mean “don’t do n00b stuff like resize 5 times”
Gaver’s is gud, he can always reinclude the audio at the end. There is a limit on how gud the quality of an encode is. And i’d say Gavers came really really really really really really really really really really really close. (In others words its perfect =])
True dat.
Yes, well, I’d love to just give my vote to gavers, but the other two haven’t posted their final versions yet, have they? It would be unfair to vote before that.
Welllllllll they’re running low on time
True True, i will consider the other encodes also. Who knows they might be better =]
wow, awesome, i never thought you’d like it, thx a lot
i’ll try to fix the audio bug (i think i know why it happens)
but i’d really like to see Yuki and Victor’s encodes.
here’s mine http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DM0HQDF0 i hope you don’t have that much problem with megaupload ._. (idk, i feel like it ended up being too blurry
)
I’ve watched both Victor and Gavers’ final releases now, and both are good. I like both of them. But Gavers’ version is sharper, and with stronger colors, and more volume on the sound, so my vote goes to him if he can fix the missing audio during the credits, which Victor’s version doesn’t have.
Gavers:
)
- Aspect ratio not dynamic. Not necessarily a bad thing because then you get control over the resizing algorithm.
+ Sharp lines
+ Strong colours (some of the brighter colours lost some colour).
+ Got rid of the black line at the top (why didn’t I notice it in mine
Victor:
+ AAC audio
+ small file size
- a bit of blockiness in Kyon’s hair at 0:15-0:17.
- framerate should be 23.98 instead of 29.97
- resolution 704×480. Wasn’t the DVD source 720×480?
Rimi:
+ small file size
- a bit of blockiness in Kyon’s hair at 0:15-0:17 (I fixed that now and file size is around the same)
I can do audio encoding, if someone can send me the raw stream. Or tell me how to extract it from the iso on a 13yo machine with a 400MHz Pentium II/or a 1.4GHz laptop w/o .NET framework.
Rimi, I find it funny that you give + to Victor for his audio, since I liked the audio in Gavers’ version better. Also, filesize is irrelevant when looking for quality, especially in this case, where they are all tiny in size anyway.
Both their audio was the same for me. So it’s purely based on AAC being better at encoding than mp3 although mp3 is good for compatibility.
Yeah filesize is irrelevant but if their quality is comparable a smaller filesize is nicer (but blockiness shows that the smaller filesize has a price).
I used MPC and a recent ffdshow. We need people who have other players.
To be honest, this time around I think I’m going to give my vote to Victor. gavers’ was a bit too bright for my liking this time (like the white in the title). Victor’s and rimi’s colours were better in that the light colours didn’t turn to white and they weren’t so bright that they kinda hurt your eyes. On the other hand though, there was some blockiness in Victor’s and rimi’s, especially in the opening sequence with the globe (it’s more visible in Victor’s encode), and neither of them removed the black bar at the top. gavers’ could probably get a lower file size too if it had a resolution of 720×480 and then anamorphically resizing it on playback.
How about we just start voting allready Shami? Yuki doesn’t look he’s going to chip in with his release any time soon.
is there something wrong if I used a frame rate of 29.97? O.o thats the frame rate that the DVD has
Btw i change the resolution cause i used once a player that didn’t care about the aspect ratio and it put the actual size O.o so this way is more compatible
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=GKFMFJ2A
^ 35 megs.
I also did one at 75 megs, though even the 35 meg one looks to be overkill.
> is there something wrong if I used a frame rate of 29.97?
One in every 5 frames is a repeat, so the animation might not be as smooth. It has been converted from the original 24 fps to 29.97 fps to put on the DVD.
K.o.R’s encode is good. Nothing much to say about it. (Black bar is minor detail.)
(Black bar is minor detail.)
*as long as it’s gone in the final release
K.o.R’s encode is perfect. I can’t find anything to complain about.
This black line you guys keep refering to…I have no idea what you mean, as I’m not observant enough to see it. :p
Look closely at the top of the picture: http://i49.tinypic.com/zl69g0.jpg (ignore the bad quality, just did a quick screeny in WMP).
