re: mp4/mkv

Uh, you guys do realize that even if it’s encoded into a MP4 container, when I mux in the subs, it’ll move to an MKV container?

Can’t you add in the subs without changing the container? It doesn’t have to be softsubs in my oppinion, and adding hardsubs to MP4 shouldn’t be a problem, or?….Well, I don’t know anything about encoding, so I can’t say, but I’ve downloaded anime with subs in MP4 format before. :-/

i know it will be MKV in the end, that’s why i don’t see any reason to put it in MKV myself.

Because that is the job of the encoder: to provide the video in the format (or formats) required for release.

      • No, he did it right – it’ll turn to MKV when we mux in the subs. At this point, there is no difference.

Depends on whether the encoder or someone else does the final muxing. It generally makes more sense to send the sub script to the encoder since the it’s a tiny file by comparison. Of course if you people have awesome upload ability it’s moot but hey :D

Personally I use MKV as a container due to it having (last time I checked) vastly, VASTLY superior tools for working with files (MKVmergeGUI vs mp4box? No contest).

MP4 is a good final container choice if your combination is h264 video and hardsubs – why people want hardsubs is mainly for compatibility with stand alone players; iPods and PSPs aren’t exactly brilliant with softsubs, but people can reasonably expect the file itself to play.

In my case at least, MeGUI outputs h264 encode jobs into an mp4 by default, which suits me since I know that the mp4 is my “before-mux” file and the mkv is my “after-mux” file – also means I don’t have to rename anything in MMG beforehand :D
